What is "Synoptic" about the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke?

The Synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke comprise a distinctive genre within the New Testament. They are characterized by their parallel structure, shared content, and narrative style. The word "synoptic" is derived from the Greek words syn (together) and optic (view). These three Gospel accounts offer a synchronized account of the life, ministry, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They emphasize different things and write from different perspectives. However, they also share common narratives, parables, and sayings, indicating a possible literary interdependence. The Synoptic Gospels provide a comprehensive portrait of Jesus. They present him as the Messiah, Son of God, and Savior while also exploring themes such as discipleship, faith, and the kingdom of God. Throughout history, the synoptic gospel literary genre of the New Testament has been a foundational source for Christian theology, spirituality, and discipleship.
