What is "Synoptic" about the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke?
The Synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke are a distinctive New Testament literary genre. They are characterized by their parallel structure, shared content, and narrative style. The word "synoptic" comes from the Greek words syn (together) and
optic (view). These three Gospel accounts present Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, and our Savior while also examining concepts such as discipleship, faith, and the kingdom of God. The fact that they share common narratives, parables, and sayings may indicate some kind of literary interdependence. The three Gospels are, however, written from different perspectives. Each Synoptic Gospel writer emphasize different things than the other two.
