From the Exodus on through the era documented in the books of Samuel, God's people, the Israelites, experienced a tumultuous journey marked by triumphs, trials, and transitions. Following the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt under Moses' leadership, they wandered in the Sinai wilderness, where they received divine guidance. Eventually, they settled in the promised land of Canaan. There, they faced numerous conflicts with several people groups already living there. The period of the Judges followed. It was marked by seemingly unending cycles of apostasy, oppression, repentance, and deliverance.
The writings of Samuel usher in a new chapter. They tell the story of the the transition from a tribal confederacy to a centralized monarchy. The prophet Samuel anointed Saul as the first king, followed by David, whose reign established what has been called the golden age of Israel. Throughout this saga, the Israelites grappled with their covenant with God. As they faced various challenges, they sometimes sought spiritual renewal.
