OL and FSG

Organizational Leadership - business communications

Family Studies and Gerontology - psychology and sociology

Both the OL and the FSG are BS degree-completion programs for people who have at least 60 hours of transferable credits. Both programs are a little over one year long. Students meet just one evening per week. Students stay in the same group for the entire year and thus, form deep friendships and end up with a natural network. Most of our students already are employed, but wish to make promotions within their organizations or move to positions in other organizations. Both programs equip students with real life process skills that are crucial to employers- problem solving and critical thinking skills, communication skills (written and oral), scientific reasoning and research skills.

Organizational Leadership (OL) is a business communications and organizational behavior/psychology program. A distinction is made between managing people and leading people. Management is an anachronistic term that connotes using people as objects. Leadership, on the other hand, implies intelligent problem solving, a spirit of servanthood, responsibility for one’s decisions, and the willingness to do what is right. Courses include, among others, interpersonal communication, group and organizational communication, organizational behavior, research, statistics, and human resources administration.

Family Studies and Gerontology (FSG) is a psychology/sociology program that emphasizes the development of individuals throughout the lifespan; prenatal to death. Students in FSG gain hands-on experiences in social services in order to apply skills. Courses include those such as counseling, family communication, human development, death and dying, crisis intervention, family dynamics, adulthood and aging, and social services resources. Students who complete their degrees with this major are broadly trained and able to fulfill many job categories.

Some job titles of recent FSG graduates are: Behavioral Health --Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist, Intake Coordinator, Mental Health Coordinator, Social Worker Assistant, Social Worker I, Social Worker Assistant, Community Life Coordinator, Child development Center Administrator, Thought Field Therapist, Assisted Living Customer Sales Representative, Probation Counselor, Assisted Living Administrator, Nursing Home Administrator, Community Education Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, Quality Assurance Coordinator, Social Service Specialist, Social Service Director, Activities Director Victim-Witness Coordinator, Victim’s Advocate Care Coordinator, Therapeutic Mentor, Community Outreach Coordinator, Community Resource Coordinator, Community Recruiter, Case Manager, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Supervisor, Hospital Patient Family Representative, Chaplain, Prevention Specialist, Community At Risk Counselor, and Intervention Specialist.
