Creation
of the Universe
Original
PBS Broadcast Date: November 20, 1984 [Note: The science in this 1984
DVD/Video is a bit dated, but the video is still compelling]
Join leading scientists as they turn up clues to the origin of the universe,
exploring today's most exciting and far-reaching theories. Could the universe
have appeared spontaneously out of a perfect vacuum? Spectacular special
effects and animation dramatize the birth of the universe. Nobel Prize-winner
Carlo Rubbia, Murray Gell-Man and world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking
explain their complex theories in easy-to-follow terms. [From http://www.shoppbs.org]
Evolution
Original PBS Broadcast Date: September 24 - 27, 2001
The Evolution project's eight-hour television miniseries travels the world
to examine evolutionary science and the profound effect it has had on
society and culture. From the genius and torment of Charles Darwin to
the scientific revolution that spawned the tree of life, from the power
of sex to drive evolutionary change to the importance of mass extinctions
in the birth of new species, the Evolution series brings this fascinating
process to life. The series also explores the emergence of consciousness,
the origin and success of humans, and the perceived conflict between science
and religion in understanding life on Earth.

Family
That Walks on All Fours
Original PBS Broadcast Date: November 14, 2006
An intense scientific debate has ignited around a quiet but extraordinary
family living in rural Turkey-a family with five adults who walk on all
fours. Since bipedalism has long been considered one of the defining characteristics
of modern humans, such a discovery raises fascinating questions about
genetics, society, and the evolutionary history of our species. Is this
the anthropological find of the millennium, or simply a unique medical
case? NOVA sets out to unravel the controversy and meet the individuals
who have captured the imagination of scientists around the world. [Adapted

Flock
of Dodos
Flock of Dodos is a documentary film by American evolutionary biologist
and filmmaker Randy Olson. It examines the disagreements that proponents
of intelligent design have with the overwhelming scientific consensus
position of evolution. The evolutionarily famous dodo is a now-extinct
bird that lived on the Island of Mauritius [near Madagascar]. It failed
to change with an evolving environment, which ultimately led to the birds'
demise. The film attempts to determine who the real "dodos"
are in a constantly evolving world: the scientists who are failing to
promote evolution as a scientifically accepted fact, the intelligent design
advocates, or the American public who get fooled by the salesmanship of
[ID proponents such as] the Discovery Institute. While Randy Olson ultimately
sides with the scientists who accept evolution, he gives equal air time
to both sides of the argument. [Adapted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flock_of_Dodos]

Origins
Original PBS
Broadcast Date: Sunday, January 11, 1998
Origins in a two hour video hosted by Charles Osgood, charts
the quest for beginnings -- of our planet, our species, and life itself.
How and when did the Earth form? What monumental forces could set entire
continents in motion, build mountains, and trigger earthquakes? How could
life have begun on a lifeless planet? From planetessimals to plate tectonics,
Darwin to DNA, "Lucy" to "Eve," Origins explores the
myriad, earth-shattering, and often mind-boggling discoveries of geologists,
biologists, paleoanthropologists, and others that have led to some of
the most contentious -- and exciting -- theories of modern science.
The
earthquake that shatters San Francisco in 1906 opens a century of explosive
discoveries and debates in the earth sciences. See the Earth through the
eyes of Alfred Wegener, who struggles to convince the scientific establishment
that continents move. Watch as radiodating techniques increase Earth's
estimated age - sometimes inspiring skepticism if not outrage. Meanwhile,
a parallel upheaval rumbles the life sciences, where new evidence of our
primate ancestors and the discovery of DNA's structure stir up controversies
of their own. Ancient fossils and living cells give up their secrets to
change our view of our species and the mechanics of life.
Highlights
include: Age and origins of the Earth. Volcanoes. Earthquakes. Alfred
Wegener. Continental drift. Harry Hess. Plate tectonics. The Himalayas.
The formation of mountains. Religion, myth, and science. Human origins.
The Scopes trial. The legacy of Charles Darwin. Mutation and adaptation.
Paleoanthropology. Louis and Mary Leakey. Donald Johanson and "Lucy."
Primordial soup. DNA. Origins of life. [Adapted from http://docuwiki.net/]
