1762
A. English Expedition secretly left Portsmouth to capture Havana, capital of the Spanish colony of Cuba

B. Spanish colonies established

1763-1825

A. Cuban sugar industry is thriving- demand and accessibility grow in North America, Cuba moves in

B. The Battle of Trafalgar- war broke out over bringing not only slave men, but slave women to encourage families.

C.       70 years of international change in the Caribbean from 1760-1830 ended with an event which would cast a shadow across the relations of Cuba with the United States for the rest of their  history

1825-1868 (industry)
 
A. Wealth of Cuba through sugar industry and partially the coffee industry grew to first-class levels
 
B. Slave trade became a big business

C. By the early 1860's there were 370,553 slaves in Cuba, who had a population of 1, 396,530

D. By the late 1860's slavery was beginning to be replaced with centrifugal machines, which refined sugar for cheaper.

1823-1895 (policitcal struggles)

A. Slavers are still leaving Havana to Africa, returning with slaves. The British fromally complain again and again.
 
B. Abolitionist David Turnbull leads a revolt against Spain and slave holders to abolish slave trade.  He was finally arrested and expelled from Cuba.

C. Club de la Habana was formed.  This club's purpose was to preserve slavery and so safeguard the chase fro walth in the future.

D. May 30- U.S. President James Polk proposed the purchase of Cuba to his cabinet.  As a result Secretary of State, Buchanan, opened negotiations with the Spanish government. This was known as the Manifest Destiny.

E. President Polk's plan directly failed.
 
F. Middle 1850's- Cuba decided to procalim itself first independent, and later apply to join the U.S., however, this idea eventually collapses.

G. Early 1860's- Planters perpare to contemplate indefinite Spanish rule, while seeking those constitutional reforms which would give them political control of Cuba, as well as the economic control they already possessed.

H. 1865- The last authenticated recorded slave vogaye to Cuba carried out and also the last authenticated journey of any slaveship to the New World.

I. War of 1868- Planters of the east rose agains Spain in eary October. In one year rebels Increased to between 10,000 and 20,000.

J. Sugar Crises of the 1880;s- At the end of the 10 years' War, the finiancial condition of most planters was one of hopeless indebteness to merchants.

K. By 1884 sugar pricess dropped sharply.

L. Cuban rebels announced on February 28, 1895- "Why should the Spanish monarchy any longer exercise despotic authority over the people of this radiant island?".....Thus beginning the War of 1895.

1902-1932

A.  Between 1902 and 1910 almost 200,000 Spaniards, mostly Gallegos or Asturians, emigrated to Cuba because of the opportunitites posed by higher wages.

B.  In 1907 there had been founed in Cuba a very threatening named Independent Party of Colour

C.  Economic crises of 1919 which smashed the Menocalian prosperity, owed its origin to the curious developments in the sugar industry both before and after the First World War.

D.  In 1933 serious strikes wer occurring in all service sections of Havana. Cuban President Machado resigns on the 9th of August.

1933-1962

A.  In January 1934 Colonel Atsta took over government through colonel Mendieta.

B.  On February 9, 1940 a new Constitution is drawn up. (revised from that of 1902).

C.  By  early1959 Batista had fallen and Castro took over.

D.  In the spring of 1959, the contenders for power were in 3 basic groups: 1.) Castro and the rebel army 2.) The Communists 3.) the liberal men of good will.

E.  Battle of Cochinos Bay in 1961-1962

F.  Cuban Missile Crises- July-October 1962
