Implants - Norplant, small tubes containing progesterone,similar to what your body produces, slowly release small amounts of the hormone preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries. If there is no egg than there is no pregnancy. They also cause changes in the lining of the uterus and cervical mucus.
Effectiveness and Cost - Implants are 99% effective and have an average cost of $450-900 every five years.
Advantages Implants work up to five years or until they are removed. Fertility returns immediately upon the removal of the implants. Implants help protect against uterine cancer. They can be used safely after child birth and while breast-feeding. Implants do not interfere with sexual intercourse.
Disadvantages - Implants cannot be used by women
with liver disease, breastcancer, unexplained uterine
bleeding, or blood clots. They may not be good for women
with high blood pressure, gall bladder disease, elevated
cholesterol,irregular periods, light periods, headaches,
or heart disease. Possible side effects include irregular
bleeding, prolonged periods, light periods, hair loss,
decreased interest in sex, acne, and depression.
