Call for Papers (2006) Love: Investigating its Meaning, History, and Expressions In his description of the Methodist character, John Wesley pointed to the heart of Christian ethics: love. He said, "A Methodist is one who has 'the love of God shed abroad in his heart by the Holy Ghost given unto him;' one who 'loves the Lord his God with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his mind, and with all his strength. God is the joy of his heart, and the desire of his soul.'" Wesley's emphasis on love hearkens back to the Greek Fathers as well as the monumental Western thinkers such as Augustine and Aquinas. Love plays a central role in Christian ethics, in our understanding of God and in the practical ways we engage others both in and out of the Christian community. With the theme, "Love: Investigating its Meaning, History, and Expressions," First Vice-President Craig Boyd and the Wesleyan Philosophical Society (WPS) issues a Call for Papers for its 2006 annual conference. The conference will be held March 2, 2006 in Kansas City, Missouri. The society will meet in conjunction with the Society of the Study of Psychology and Wesleyan Theology (SSPWT). (Check WPS website updates for exact hotel and meeting site information here.). Papers are invited on any aspect of love including the philosophy of God, theoretical and applied ethics, aesthetics and metaphysics. (Submissions for other philosophical topics will be considered, although preference will be given to those dealing with the selected theme.) Submit proposals of 250 words or less, along with name, position, and institutional affiliation (if applicable) to Brint Montgomery at brint@snu.edu by October 1, 2005. The proposal should be sent as an email attachment in Microsoft Word format.. |
