Call for Papers, 2008 Meeting of the Wesleyan Philosophical Society

"Philosophy and Science: Contemporary Explorations"

Location: Duke University
Conference Date: March 13, 2008
Proposal Due Date: October 1st, 2007

One of the hot topics in contemporary philosophy is its relationship to science. What, if anything, do philosophers have to say to scientists and what, if anything, do scientists have to say to philosophers? While there are those who hold that there is almost nothing that one can say to the other, most recognize a burgeoning dialogue between the two fields of discourse. With the theme, “Philosophy and Science: Contemporary Explorations,” First Vice-President Robert J. Thompson and the Wesleyan Philosophical Society (WPS) issues a Call for Papers for its 2008 annual conference. The conference will be held March 13, 2008 on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The society will meet in conjunction with the Society of the Study of Psychology and Wesleyan Theology (SSPWT). (Check WPS website updates for exact hotel and meeting site information http://wps.snu.edu.)

Papers are invited on any aspect of the interface of Philosophy and Science including, though not limited to: the metaphysics or ontology of nature/creation; issues raised in cosmology; issues raised in the philosophy of mind, cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence; issues raised by intelligent design; issues related to the relationship between science and religion; the Divine relationship to nature as Creating, Redeeming, and Sustaining presence; evolutionary theory as it relates to biology, sociobiology, culture, ethics, and religion; Christian anthropology; the scope and limits of scientific method; reductionism, emergence, supervenience, and the technological. (Submissions for other philosophical topics will be considered, although preference will be given to those dealing with the selected theme.)

Submit proposals of 250 words or less, along with name, position, and institutional affiliation (if applicable) to Brint Montgomery at Brint@snu.edu by October 1, 2007. The proposal should be sent as an email attachment in Microsoft Word format. Each proposal will undergo a double-blind peer review process.
