SNU Chorale Handbook
Purpose
The SNU Chorale is dedicated to the study and performance of the finest choral literature (sacred and secular) of all musical eras. To understand music is to know an entire range of human expression, and to be able to perform music means participating in that communication. Together, Chorale singers share in the privilege of bringing the music they perform to life, and to sharing their faith in Christ through that music.
Officers
Officers for the following year will be elected each May. A nominating committee will be formed to solicit/propose officer candidates.
President – Leads the Chorale in the absence of the director and in all matters of business, organization, delegation, etc. Represents the Chorale in public and assists the director while traveling to and from concerts.
Vice‑President/Public Relations – Leads/Represents the Chorale in the absence of the President. Assists the President in Chorale business, etc. Serves as a link to publicity and community public relations. Is responsible for SNU display table and materials.
Chaplain – Responsible for the spiritual “pulse” and special needs of the Chorale. Provides or secures devotionals/prayer time during the week and at concerts.
Librarian/Treasurer – Assists in dispersing, maintaining, and collecting all Chorale music. Works in cooperation with director and music office staff. Collects and is responsible for any monies for attire, music, etc.
Section Leaders
One member from each section will be appointed to serve as section leader. The leader’s responsibilities include taking attendance, monitoring the learning and perfecting of the music, conducting sectional rehearsals, and assisting with individual singer’s needs.
Music/Folders
Once distributed and assigned, Chorale members are responsible for their own music. Lost or damaged music must be paid for before the beginning of the following semester. Black folders (no writing on outside) must be secured before the first concert.
Concert Appearance
Members will secure the appropriate formal attire for performance. Men: black tuxedo coat and pants, white wingtip tuxedo shirt, black vest and wrap tie, black shoes and socks. Women: Black dress (hemmed 1” off the floor in concert shoes) and jacket, black shoes (closed toe and heel-no platforms), black hose, pearl stud earrings and uniform pearl necklace (SNU property - checked out). It is important, especially when traveling, that proper care and protection be given to this attire in the use of garment bags and/or appropriate luggage. Attire should regularly be cleaned and pressed.
As members of a performing group we should present ourselves in a professional manner and thus the group “look” is most important, i.e. not drawing attention to oneself. Therefore, no unnatural colored hair, lip/nose rings, etc.
Rehearsal Decorum
A positive and focused rehearsal is expected so as to produce the quickest and most musical learning of music. A commitment to excellence is expected from every member.
Memorization of music
It is expected that all members will memorize music for concert performances as assigned by the director.
Performances
It is imperative that all Chorale members know their music. Performances demand enthusiasm and disciplined spontaneity. Give your most intense attention – give your finest musicianship – give yourself! To insure the best performances, allow yourself proper rest and hydration the night before!!
Solo/Small group opportunities
Auditions for solos in choral pieces will be held as needed. Only those prepared to audition need audition. Opportunities for solos or small groups within concert programs also exist. Priority will be given to classical, sacred solo, or hymn arrangements.
Committees
Public Relations ‑ Take publicity materials, CD's, and programs into concert venue and set up display in major entrance/exit. Put programs in proper locations for distribution by ushers. After each concert, be available to distribute materials, sell CD's, and answer questions. Be responsible to tear down display and collect all unused materials and programs. (chaired by VP/Public Relations)
Luggage ‑ Arrive early to organize luggage as it comes and load bus. Unload bus when arrive at destination. This will be organized by men's sections. (assigned by President)
Every Chorale member is expected to travel with the group to and from our concerts, whether local or out-of-town. Special permission to travel independently must be obtained in writing from the director three weeks prior to the concert (forms are provided). After receiving the director's permission, it will then be YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get directions to the concert site and arrive in a timely manner (early!).
Punctuality is necessary for group travel. It fosters a respect for each other, our bus drivers, concert hosts, and the need to stay on schedule. We will stay on schedule. If someone is late for a departure time and transportation has left, it is expected that they will provide their own transportation and meet us at the concert site. You are still expected to be there!
Eph. 5: 1-5…..Our personal conduct should always represent a “higher standard”. Our conduct while we travel is important to keeping a congenial atmosphere within the Chorale “family”. For instance, noise level on the bus should be kept within respectful limits as several may need to sleep or study (not to mention the wear and tear on your voice). There may be instances when a “quiet time” is called where all talking (and whispering) will cease. Remember, don’t talk about others and don’t give in to any inappropriate language. Absolutely no PDA as this is embarrassing to those around us. Please work courteously and promptly with all committees as they are provided for everyone’s convenience. When officers ask for help…volunteer. Instead of giving in to a complaint, give in to a smile!
Our conduct while we travel will be the lasting witness we make, not just the concert itself. Strangers may not understand nor appreciate our “practical jokes” and side remarks. Church members expect college students to respect their church, both in terms of deportment and in the manner in which church facilities are used. No food or drink in church sanctuaries – respect the Lord’s house. If not in formal attire, always dress appropriately and conservatively (SNU dress code). Please be fully dressed when arriving at a venue. It’s inappropriate to “relax” your dress during meals. It is encouraged that Chorale members leave thank-you notes with each host family that they stay with.
